   12 DAYS ALTAI CIRCUIT

The towering Altai Mountain range, stands majestically in western Mongolia, offers stunning mountain sceneries. Most of the peaks in this mountain range are above 4000 metres and are permanently covered with glaciers and snow, while the valleys are carpeted with green pastures and colourful wild flora. The natural beauty of western Mongolia is becoming popular with travellers, especially with professional climbers to scale the highest peak in Mongolia - the Tavanbogd. You will experience the unique nomadic Kazakh culture as western Mongolia is primarily dominated by Kazakhs.

We have designed a 12-day western Altai circuit that allows you to immense in the Kazakh culture and be awed by the beauty of the scenic western Mongolia.

 

Highlights of the trip

  1. Tavanbogd Uul is one of the most scenic places to visit. It comprises of five peaks which are snowcapped throughout the year.
  2. Visit the Kazakhs nomad and understanding their nomadic lifestyle
  3. Scale Mt. Tsengel Kharykhan that stands at 3943 metres above sea level.
  4. Terelj, a popular and scenic countryside which offers good hiking and horse riding opportunities.

Day 1 - Ulaanbaatar
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar with airport transfer to hotel. City sightseeing tour. Overnight in Ulaanbaatar.

Day 2 – Bayan Ölgii
Depart for Bayan-Ölgii which involves a four-hour domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar. The bird eye view of the Mongolian landscape is simply breathtaking. Arrive in Bayan-Ölgii and transfer to the local hotel. Free and easy in the provincial capital city.

Day 3 and 4 – Mt Tsengel Kharkhyan
A six-hour drive will bring you to Mt Tsengel Kharkhyan which stands at 3943 metres above sea level and is literally covered with snow throughout the year. Scaling the mountain will take about six to ten hours depending on the condition of the climber and the weather. Ice axe and crampons are necessary to get to the top. The view from the peak is truly magnificent!
Camp at the foot of the mountain on Day 3 and the ascent takes place early morning on Day 4.

Day 5 – Khovd River
Khovd River, flows from the Tavanbogd Mountain to the Khovd Lake, provides excellent scenery and camping grounds. Spend a relax day by the river. You may try fishing from the river, but do not be surprise with the size of your catch.

Day 6 – Bayan Uul
A long drive on Day 6 to get from Khovd River to Bayan Uul. You will camp near the Altai Mountain range. Weather can be chilly in the evening.

Day 7 – Tavanbogd
An eight-hour horse riding experience awaits you on Day 7. Riding through the mountainous terrain to the Tavanbogd lookout is definitely an interesting yet non-touristy experience. The scenery is definitely awesome. You, too, will get to meet some friendly Kazakh nomads along the way.

Day 8 – Bayan-Ölgii
Transit back to Bayan-Ölgii. On the return journey, you will stop over at some ancient rock cravings that were created hundreds of years ago.

Day 9 - Ulaanbaatar
Depart Bayan-Ölgii for Ulaanbaatar on a four-hour exhilarating flight. Check into hotel in Ulaanbaatar. Free and easy in the capital city.

Day 10 and 11 - Terelj
Situated on the southern tip of the Khentii Nuruu (Khentii is believed to be the burial ground for Chinggis Khan), Terelj offers excellent hiking opportunities and horse riding through cooling alpine scenery. Swimming in icy water is definitely worth a try! Free and easy in Terelj.

Day 12 - Ulaanbaatar
Last minute souvenir shopping in Ulaanbaatar, checking emails, doing laundry, dining in restaurants are some of the things you can engage before heading home. Free and easy in the capital city.
